FD (Manual Focus) Lens to Canon EOS (Auto Focus) Body Mount Adapter from 47th St. Camera
I ordered both adapters from Amazon.Com and recieved the CZFDEOSA from Adorama and a product marked Kipon FD-EOS from 47th ST Camera. The Kipon product is excellent. Unfortunately it can easily be mis-used for three reasons. 1) It is high precision and fits the EOS body very tight. It must be turned until it “clicks”, which takes more than the expected force. 2) The adapter lens mount allows the adapter lens to be easily removed, and might be positioned out of range of focus. There is no lens stop, which is good since I can adjust to match the exact point of infinity on the lens. The position seems to be the same for all my FD lenses. 3) The product would benefit from some instructions even though they are obvious to many users. I made a number of disappointing shots until I got everything set right. I currently leave the adapter on my 50D body and I only use FD lenses.
I find I must check that the FD lens aperature ring is not set on A (automatic). We will be setting the aperature manually. The EOS camera is set to AE so only the shutter speed changes with metering. We manually adjust the aperature and ISO settings to get the depth of field and shutter speed we want.
My most common error is that the lens aperature is not stopping down because the adapter is not in the “Lock” position. All is well if I start mounting the lens with the adapter set to “Open”, set the lens to manual wide open, mount the lens on the camera and then set the adapter to “Lock” position. I can check the aperature ring function by stopping down and looking into the view finder (not the LCD) to see the difference. No difference means the adapter is “open” and must be moved to “Lock”. If the FD lens is still in automatic then the manual aperature ring might not move until I take the lens back off the adapter.
My opinion is that the glass in the adapter does not reduce the sharpness of the FD lenses I have. I got some great shots of the craters on the full moon with my FD 500mm which was previously very difficult to use on the Canon A1. I now set the ISO to 3200 on my 50D and get 1/1000th shutter speed at f8. No detectable shake. Same technique works using the Closeup Macro. I can see the pores on my skin. Creative photography is more than point and shoot for me. Automatic focus and image stabilization are luxuries I can trade off for more FD lenses I didn’t used to consider.

The brand I received was “Kipon”. The adapter comes without instructions, but I found it easy to figure out (It just took about 30 seconds). One red dot was to line up with the eos camera mount, and the other red dot was to line up with the FD lens mount. The words “lock and open” are written on the adapter. You turn it counterclockwise (open) to mount the lens, after which you can leave it as is, or you can turn it clockwise (lock) to get the aperture blades to stop down. I’m not a camera expert but I did not find it that difficult to use.
As might be expected, the corrective lens is not high quality, but then again it doesn’t claim to be. Quality of pictures is hit or miss. Some of them do come out soft (in some cases ‘misty’, or with a bright aura), but other times I can’t tell the difference from those taken with an EF lens. I’ve taken a lot of good pictures with this adapter.
In the end, it’s good for playing around with your old FD lenses, but probably not a replacement for EF-dedicated lenses.

This adaptor is supposed to allow you to use an old FD Canon lens on a Canon EOS digital camera. When I opened the package there were no instructions, so I had to use my reasoning powers to figure out how to attach it to my Rebel body. I finally got that far and then attached an old Canon FD lens, a 35 to 135, expecting great things. Well it did fit, but the Rebel’s electronics doesn’t couple with the lens, so there is no illuminated image as you look through the viewfinder. I took some shots and they were all dark and unusable. So, I sent it back and got a refund.
Bottom line: This product didn’t work as I thought it should, and I do not recommend it to any Canon owner.

The Canon 24-70/2.8 has been my primary lens for the past two years. It has served me well and was hands down my favorite lens for this focal length, until I tried the 24/1.4 II from Canon. This lens has very fast and accurate focus, and the images are incredibly sharp, even wide-open. I’ve decided that I can live without the 25-70mm focal length of the 24-70 for this lens.
The minimum focus is 0.8ft, which allows you to get incredibly close to your subject, and the 24mm gives you a very wide view to capture your entire subject.
The 1.4 aperture is incredibly fast. Combine that with fast focus and incredible sharpness and you now have a lens you can use indoors without flash (Note: 1.4 aperture comes with a thin depth-of-field. Focusing on the eye will leave you with a blurry nose and forehead, very smooth bokeh).
I’ve used the following Canon lenses and this one tops the list and is now on my 5D II 70% of the time (have to leave time for the 70-200).
Canon 16-35/2.8 II: Fantastic lens if this is the focal length you’re looking for. This lens has the fish-eye effect at 16mm with full-frame sensors
Canon 50/1.4: Great focal length and speed, but overdue for a refresh. This is a great lens if you’re looking for the soft feel of photos.
Canon 85/1.2: Excellent lens, if your subject isn’t moving. Very slow focus combined with very narrow depth of field equals out-of-focus photo.
Canon 135/2: Very sharp. Perhaps one of the sharpest lenses Canon makes. The 24/1.4 II is as good if not better.
Canon 70-200/2.8 IS: Hands down the best lens in this focal length (ok, you could argue the 135/2 is better if that’s the length you’re looking for).
Canon 300/4 IS: Very sharp lens with quick and accurate focus. It’s also about 25% of the price of the 300/2.8 IS.
If this is the focal length you’re looking for, this lens will prove to be an incredible choice. This lens is not on the cheap end, with respect to price. But I feel the 24/1.4 II is worth every penny. If you’re on the edge of purchasing the lens, rent it and you’ll be back here hitting the “Add to Shopping Cart” button.

To be clear, my main complaint is with the listing that specifies “(2) Spare BP-511/BP-511a Battery for Canon”, but what you get are (2) CTA DB-BP511 batteries that are compatible with Canon BP-511 batteries. This is unacceptable listing practices. Maybe it’s an error, but the lady on the phone (who was very polite and offered a full refund, for which I presumably would have to pay the shipping; I refused the refund, and said I would try out the batteries) said that Amazon doesn’t allow you to specify properly. Upon further pressure, she backpedaled and said she’s not the one that does the listings. She’s obviously trying to cover their tracks instead of own up to the error. She also would not commit to making an attempt to fix the error.
My take, if you can list the charger as a CTA charger, then you can list the batteries as CTA DB-BP511 batteries.
BOTTOM LINE: The listing is incorrect, you DO NOT get BP-511 batteries, you get DB-BP511 batteries.
Also, the screen protectors you receive are not sized to the camera screens, they have to be cut to size. Further, they are poor screen protectors muck up the transparency of the screen and are basically worthless. I would recommend invisiShield products from Zagg instead.
The backpack is exactly what everyone who has reviewed the individual item says it is, which is quite good. It’s a really good backpack for the price, with good separators and padding inside the main compartment. I would have preferred more pockets in the other pockets, however. Also, the outside straps are not quick release. They are the kind that loop through the buckle and are drawn tight, which means attaching/removing items through those loops is quite difficult and time consuming. I carry around a light tripod with this back pack, and since there’s only one loop on either side of the bag, the tripod swings around a lot. On the bottom of the bag are two loops that can secure it better, but not well, and it ends up swinging forward/backward and hitting me in the butt. It’s a good beginner bag/light camera travel bag, but as a beginner with a Canon 40D, 3 lenses, filters for each lens, and a flash unit, I have already outgrown the bag and will be looking for something else; while keeping this as a “light camera bag”.
